Welcome to Astronomy Tuition
Johanna’s interest in astronomy began at a very young age and since then she has consciously tailored her education to satisfy her thirst of knowledge of the Universe. After completing her school education she achieved her MPhys Astrophysics at the University of Sussex then moved to Keele University to study for her PhD.
Her research thesis (entitled “On the Origin of Lithium-Rich Stars in Open Clusters: Detailed Spectroscopy using the Very Large Telescope”) was looking at one of the first confirmed chemically polluted stars; a member of the open cluster NGC 6633. This work required a very detailed understanding of a wide variety of astrophysical concepts, observational techniques and analytical methods.
During this time Johanna was lucky enough to carry out several observing runs at the William Herschel Telescope on La Palma in the Canary Islands and take part in international conferences enabling strong links to be forged with the international professional astronomy community.
Despite leaving professional research in 2007 Johanna’s passion for this diverse subject combined with her professional experience and academic links allows her to span all ages and knowledge levels in her new role as a freelance astronomy tutor, presenter and consultant. To date she has worked with groups as diverse as primary school children to Open University Undergraduates and consulted for the BBC on shows including ‘Bang Goes the Theory’.
